I love this name but worried about nickname

If I have a girl I want Abigail, but NOT ABBEY!!!!!!!! I cant stress that enough. Nothing againest it, but the name Abigail is what Im naming her and what I want her to be called by family and friends. What do you think? Would she be just stuck with being called Abbey by some? Or Is it possible to be called the name I give her if I stay on top of it?

We have a friend whose daughter is 1.  Everyone still calls her Abigail, but I don't know how long that will last!

No matter what, people will do nicknames.  What about Gail as a shortened version?

My name is Elizabeth (which is often shortened) but nobody calls me by any nicknames and never has... maybe because my mom stayed on it when I was little? Maybe because I always introduced myself as Elizabeth and nothing shorter? I don't know... I think its possible to keep the long version if you make your opinion clear to those closest to you.

(love the new photos by the way)

I think it is totally possible to keep the full name on not let people call her a nickname. My sister tried to call my youngest son Jacob (his middle name) because she didn't like Riley and all I had to do was tell her once that his name what Riley and that was what I named him and I didn't want him called anything else. I really think that if you stay on top of it people will catch on.

Could be where you live too though. My husband is Andrew and if he introduces himself as that, people immediately call him Andy.   So he just goes by Drew.

I think that no matter what, your kid will have a nickname!

I hear you.  My older DS is Zachary (which I wasn't that fond of anyway) and EVERYONE shortened it to Zach.  I cringed but let it go.  To this day I still think of that little saved by the bell brat.  My 2 year old first name is Jakob-William and even the nurses in the hospital called him Jake (not my intention either)  I think at least in this area, you're doomed to nickname hell.

I thing if you stick with her real name, others should catch on.  For those who don't, a simple, "oh, her name is Abigail" should suffice.  I have a four syllable name and growing up my mom always called me by my name, so going to school, when others would try to shorten my name, I'd just correct them (and maybe not too politely, but that was a long time ago).

I just shortened my name on here because I have yet to tell my friends (just family knows) and some of these friends are pregnant, too.  I'm going to tell them soon, so now I guess I'll just sign my real name...
