We are doing our part by raising environmentally conscious children who will grow up continually asking “What can I do to help make this world a better place?”

We compost everything we can and use the resulting muck to enrich the soil in our garden.

My family recycles everything that can possibly be recycled.  We've reduced our weekly garbage from 15-20 pounds per week to 1-2 pounds per week.

When I started cloth diapering my daughter, we put a clothesline in our backyard.  Now I use it for so much more than diapers.  It makes me feel good to look out my back door and see the clean laundry blowing in the breeze.

We use Freecycle.  My 3 year old thinks it's so cool to give his old toys to other kids and he loves going to other homes to get "new to him" toys.  Plus, it has given us a great chance to meet other people.

We teach our children the wonder of God's creation (Earth) by planting an organic vegetable garden and sharing the bounty with our friends and neighbors.

I have switched all of my cleaning products over to natural based products. This includes Laundry Detergent, Dryer Sheets, Dish Soap, Dishwashing liquid, All kitchen and bathroom cleaning agents. And...They even clean better than those harsh chemical ones!!!

I use Shaklee products and became a distributor to share the products with everyone. I also use organic bamboo diapers, liners & wipes on my 3 month old son!

We limit our driving to one or two days a week. We live in a rural area and it takes quite a while to get into town so we try to have as much fun as we can at home without having to use gasoline to get somewhere. When we do have to use the car, we combine lots of errands and don't let the car idle.

Our family bi-weekly recycles for plastics, paper, glass and cans (it's amazing what a family of three can generate, the bins are always full).  Sure it's an additional cost and a small inconvenience, but isn't it nice to try to do the right thing:)  If you can curb a trash can you can curb a bin!

    EDITED 7/9 -

I think my children are causing me to regress back to my childhood days of not reading directions Stick out tongue  I was reading through the tips (which by the way have given me some very good ideas that I hadn't thought of before - so THANK YOU!  Wink , when I realized that everyone else's entries were much more concise than mine.  So, I read the directions (which I really did think I read before) and saw that I was only supposed to include ONE tip in my entry Embarrassed.  Here's my real entry now (with the original below so people aren't confused about why I'm changing it now.)

My best tip for being green and helping to save our Earth,

Is a trick that my brilliant Mom taught me from birth!

In order to minimize use of our AC

(while still staying comfy -  which is important to me)

We close window shades on the east in the morning,

Open windows at night (unless there is a storm warning),

Turn off any lights that you surely don't need.

Its a tip that is simple and is easy to heed.

    ORIGINAL MESSAGE:

Going green is quite important to me,

It means preserving the Earth for my family.

We don’t do everything we could possibly do,

But even the little things help the Earth too!

Instead of driving my oldest to school,

We walk or we bike – and she thinks that’s cool!

We recycle our metals, papers and plastics.

We reuse non-recyclables in ways fun and fantastic!

We have converted to more efficient appliances,

We’ve tried to reduce our gas and water reliance.

We’ve planted a garden to grow some fresh food.

(We’re also learning a lot, which I think is quite good!)

The most important thing we do is to just be aware,

Because each baby step shows the Earth that we care!

We have replaced all the light bulbs we can with the energy efficient ones.  I also do a lot of my 9 month old son's clothes shopping at garage sales or places like freecycle or craigslist.  We also clean out our closets and take clothes to local organizations accepting donations.

I make a concious effort to use more cloth kitchen towels and dish clothes then paper towels. It's just as easy to throw them in the washer with regular towels and saves on paper usage.
