recent scabies outbreak in first trimester

Hey everyone! My name is Que and I'm "new" to the board. "New" because I used to post a lot in my last pregnancy about 4 years ago. So this is my 4th pregnancy (I have had 2 mc's). I am about 9 -12 weeks along so far (not confirmed by ultrasound, i have overactive ovaries and ovulated more than once in april). My family recently came down with scabies from who knows where. We are all currently treating ourselves with a cream (5% permethrin), laundering EVERYTHING, and spraying rid on our beds, couch, and Lysol on toys and the rest. My pregnancy has been pretty easy and predictable so far which has been nice, but this scabies outbreak has me worried. I have been trying to read up as much as possible, but most info seems pretty vague about pregnancy and scabies. I was wondering if anyone has experiened anything like this? I tried to be as thorough as possible in treating each member of my family as well as our furniture and clothes so that we might only have to be exposed to these chemicals once, but once is still more than I prefer and I am still worried.

Did your Dr prescribe the cream to you? I don't want to alarm you, especially if your Dr said it was ok but in my medical dictionary I will quote word for word "For children 2 months and older and nonpregnant adults, permethrin 5% cream is applied to the entire body surface, avoiding the eyes and the mouth. The cream is thoroughly washed off after about 8 to 14 hr. Retreatment is sometimes required in 14 days. Pregnant women and infants under 2 months of age should be treated with 6% precipitated sulfer in petrolium, daily for 3 days."  The permethrin is a topical drug and considered a pregnancy category C but if I am reading it correctly it is only contraindicated if you have open wounds, abrasions or an allergy to the drug. I would think that if there were a problem it would have shown itself by now, so I wouldn't worry too much. If it was not your OB who prescribed it you can always just give them a call to confirm that the med is considered a safe one. The scabies themselves should have no effect on your pregnancy, it is just the meds you need to worry about. Hope I helped and didn't scare you, like I said, just call your Dr, since it's just a cream I'm sure you're fine. Let us know what you find out!

Thanks for your reply. yes, My doc prescribed the meds. Not my ob. I did call my ob first before using though. My doc said the cream I was using was pregnancy category b... but honestly I don't know the differences. The first couple of days, it looked like the cream didn't work and I was still breaking out all over, even on my face... but today seems promising. The swelling in the bites and burrows has gone down a lot. My husband's bites have almost gone away completely but he wasn't affected that bad. My daughter was hardly affected, but still treated and she has not come up with any bites yet either. My doc still wants me to use the cream again this weekend so that I don't have to worry about scabies later on. I guess things are looking better, I sure hope things continue in this direction. This has been just yucky!
