    Cerclage Anyone?

Well, I just left the doctor's office and I have to have a cerclage performed this Friday!  I am very nervous although I know if I don't have it done, my risk of risk losing the baby is greater.  It is weird because I am almost 15 weeks and thought I was out of the dangerous zone.  Can anyone that has had one before give any advice?

    Re: Cerclage Anyone?

I had a miscarriage from an incompetent cervix august of 2007.  So this pregnancy I had to have a cerclage placed at around 14 weeks.  It wasnt so bad.  I mean I was awake for the whole procedure and I had to get an epidural spinal block type thing.  You dont feel a thing at all.  I didnt know they were even touching me.  The longest part is the epidural, unless they put you out.  Otherwise a cerclage doesnt take that long to actually put in. Mine took less then 5 minutes.  Then you go to recovery.  I had to wait until I could start moving my knees a little cuz with the spinal you can move or feel anything below your waste at all. then they send you back to your room and you get to relax there and they normally only keep you until you are able to pee at least once or twice.  But you dont even know the cerclage is in there.  there may be a little bleeding for a few days after, but that is nothing to worry about.  Then it just stays in there til they remove it in the office at about 37 weeks.  I still have mine (I am 24 weeks 2 days) and it has been working great.  Nothing has gone wrong and it is holding very well.  I dont even know I have it.

Good Luck.  I hope this helped.  Just relax.  Getting stressed out about situations normally just makes them worse.  I was really freaked out the whole 3 weeks before I had to go in and it wasn't as bad as I expected it to be.

The cerclage from what I heard isn't that bad at all. You have to take it easy for a while though. I may have to have one done if my cervix starts shortening due to a cone biopsy I had in November of last year. Good luck! Take it easy and don't stress too much

Thanks Ladies, it is very comforting to hear from those out there who have experienced the same thing that I am going through.  I know I should not be nervous because they have found out early enough that I my cervix was shortening but it is hard to do when it is something you never experienced before.    Hopefully after tomorrow and a little rest, I can go about my days normally.  Do you mind Jennifer if I ask what restrictions your doctor gave you to compare notes?

    Re: Cerclage Anyone?

I didnt get many restrictions really.  For the first couple days I had to lay in bed and could only get up to shower and potty.  and I could not have sex for a week (not that I wanted to anyway), and you should not take a bath for a week or 2 after, just showers.  Other than that I dont have any.  I think when it is done early enough you dont have as much to worry about rather than if it were done later and on an absolute emergency basis.  I waited a week and a half with my restrictions just so I would feel completely comfortable and safe.  But I take bubble baths and walk around alot and do all the things I normally would and it has been fine.  I dont even know it is there.  Sometimes I wonder if I actually have one. lol.  I know i do though because you can see it in an ultrasound.  I have had sex maybe twice since I had the cerclage (I havent been sexual feeling since I got pregnant.) and it was fine.  I didnt let him go in all the way though, just for my own peice of mind, but he is aloud to.  Just when you have sex it has to be gentle (no cowgirl riding the bull or hip buster type stuff).  You will have alot more discharge and it will be aliot thicker because it kind of gets caught on the stitch from the cerclage and builds up all the time and so its alot thicker and alot more often, but thats normal.  Other than that, there isnt much to it.

Cuddlebunny-  I did not get your reply at all but my cerclage went well..  the baby looked great before and after but I am a tad bit sore and bleeding a bit.  My doctor told me all of this is normal, just have to watch for a temperature and excessive pain.  Unlike Jennifer who replied earlier, I was given general anthesia but from the time I got it to leaving it was only about 2 hours total.    I am just at home resting until I have to go back to work on Monday.
