    Chorionic Villi Sampling

Hi everyone, hope there is someone out there that can help me. I am now seven weeks and one day pg. My family practice doc is going to refer me to a high risk OB, and he believes the OB may want me to have a chorionic villi sampling done at approx. 10 weeks. I heard it is a very painful procedure, and the risk of m/c is doubles compared to amniocentesis. I don't want to wait til I am 16 weeks along to find out if everything is going okay, but I am also a big chicken when it comes to pain:(. I am also comtemplating skipping any invasive procedure, and just going through pg with u/s results, but I think it would be a long, nerve racking pregnancy and delivery. Any suggestions or experience would be greatly appreciated.

    Re: Chorionic Villi Sampling

I had one done when I was 11wks with my first daughter. Mine was done thru the tummy, they can also do them thru the cervix (which would scare the crap out of me!!) Honestly it wasn't TOO painful, I mean childbirth is WAYYYYYYY worse. It took about 3 minutes?? I dont remember much cramping, I had no bleeding, it isn't something I'd do for fun, but it served its purpose for me. 10 days later I found out I was having a chromosomally (I'm sure I murded the spelling on that one!) normal lil girl. I wish I could remember more about it but it was over 8 years ago! Are you doing it because they found something wrong? or because of your age? Maybe hold off on the CVS and do a Nuchal Translucency fold test http://www.babycenter.com/0_nuchal-translucency-screening_118.bc  I had that done first that came back HIGH for Downs Syndrome or Turners Syndrome. That's why I had mine done (at the age of 21)

    It's a BOY!

    Re: Chorionic Villi Sampling

Yes, I am 38 years old. I had a positive AFP with my now 10 year old, which he is fine, but it was a very long 3-4 week wait for the amnio results. Also, I have had two babies with anencephaly. My doc is very thorough on things, but I feel like a pin cushion sometimes. I guess when I meet my new OB, him/her and I will just have to weigh all the options. Taking it one day at a time. You got to find out the sex at 11 weeks though? That's great in itself, but no reason to go through such an invasive procedure. Thanks for replying.
