Re: any overweight pregnant moms out there?
Hi All,
It's nice to know I am not the only chubby one here. I started weight watchers for my new year's resolution. I had been married 10+yrs and I gained nearly 60lbs. I clocked in at 230 at 5'9" and decided that was not going to happen. By March I had lost 30lbs was down to 205 and still had not even worked out or went walking. I was looking forward to getting back into my old skin and I found out on my 39th bday March 22nd I was prego and expecting our first. Shocked and surprised. I am not sure what is worse, the weight or the age??? I am staying on Weight Watchers because all the food is healthy, I have decided on my own not be so strict with points. The weather is getting a little better here in Mass so I plan on walking anyway. I am only 5wks prego, and I do not see the Dr for another couple of weeks, but I am trying not to gain more than 15lbs because of the risks with the weight and the age. My biggest concern was that I ate fish 4-5 times per week and tuna at least 2-3. So since I have found out I have not eaten any of that. As for the fish it was cod and haddock, so I feel a little better that they were not high in mercury. But I am really craving the fish and of all things peanut butter. Has anyone heard horror stories on eating Peanut Butter. One of my friend's Dr. told her to say away while pregnant because it was linked to Peanut Allergies? I think it sounds like being too much of a hypochondriac? I'd like to hear anyones thoughts. Take care and let's continue the thread.

I too have heard PB horror stories, but I don't know them to be true or urban legend. I know that if you're on WIC they give you PB coupons b/c it is a good, healthy source of protein. You could try a search as well. I also know that you are supposed to avoid the fish, but honestly I don't think you need to cut it out totally, just like you said be particular about what kinds you are eating and not as frequently.
Congratulations on baby #1! Were you not planning on having children or just waiting for the perfect time, which turned out to be now?

Re: any overweight pregnant moms out there?
Thank you for posting this topic! I am in my 7th week, expecting my first child. I started off at about 240. So far I have gained 5 lbs. I was really nervous about being an overweight preggo, but now I am feeling a little better. I have been craving peanut butter like mad. Especially wrapped in chocolate. lol. I also heard that it could be linked to nut allergies. I'm not a seafood eater, so I am not worried about the mercury thing. But, I was really bummed when I read that I couldn't eat bleu cheese. I have also wanted a lot of salad lately and I usually despise lettuce. I guess it's a good thing though, because it's healthy and better than packing on more pounds with junk food. Thanks again for starting this topic!

Re: any overweight pregnant moms out there?
As for being pregnant this time around. It just seemed like the right time. We spent so much time with schooling and getting degrees, that you some times lose sight of making a life when you work so much. So this past year we bought a house in the country, with a huge yard and my husband decided he wanted them. I could have went either way in life, but I was on board and here I am. Hoping the age thing will not be a huge factor. To be honest, I only see myself having the one, because of the age, but never say never. I know very little about WIC, not even sure what it stands for, but I have eaten peanut butter and I can not image it being that bad. I like my PBJ's.

oh yeah, as for the cheese. I know it's a killer, but because of the bacteria it takes to make and the fact that all good cheeses are not pasturized they carry that mold/bacteria that makes them taste so good. I think the thing that bothered me most was deli meats. I could understand genoa salami, but turkey???? I was told to heat my meats up in the microwave till they were steaming....mmm, gotta love that bologne and cheese

Re: any overweight pregnant moms out there?
WIC=women, infants & children. It's a government program that provides food vouchers for things such as eggs, cheese, milk, cereal, PB, fruit juice and dried beans to pregnant & breast feeding women, babies and kids under 5. It is income based and services low to low/middle income families. They also provide infant formula and cereals if you are not breast feeding. It's not the same as food stamps, WIC has a higher income level limit and the vouchers are for specific items. It's a great government resource if you qualify. I don't think I heard the turkey ban thing before! What is that about?

Re: any overweight pregnant moms out there?
Ok. when I say turkey. Basically I was told any meat you purchase at the deli (which would include turkey when I asked) needs to be heated up still steam is coming off. The claim is that all deli meats carry some type of bacteria due the process in which they are made, I think it's called Listeria. So I was told it all needed to be heated...it's too bad because I love turkey blt sandwiches and bologna and cheese w/pickles.
As for the WIC thing, It's nice to see the gov't does something...it is not something we would ever qualify for, but it's nice to know a low income family can supply their children with proper nutrition.

Re: any overweight pregnant moms out there?
My hubby and I are currently trying to get preggo and I am a very fluffy 210, 5'2". I am so worried about getting bigger when I finally do get pregnant without actually looking pregnant and having to wear those goofy baby-on-board t-shirts so that people will know instead of thinking that I'm just getting fluffier and fluffier. My old OB/GYN was an older guy and very old-fashioned in the way he viewed women (I'm in Alabama if that gives you any sort of clue) and I was very concerned with the way my he would treat me when I went in to tell him I was trying to conceive because he harped on my weight at EVERY visit, making me feel ashamed of the way I looked. It made going to the lady-doctor even harder that it normally is!! I decided to change to another dr and the first thing I told her on my consultation/pre-conception visit was "Look, I know I'm a big girl. That isn't going to change any time soon and I want to have a positive pregnancy. So, if we're going to have a problem, tell me now." She laughed (thank God) and told me that she wasn't even going to say anything about my weight and that I'm healthy, so that's all that matters. I was sooooo relieved. I love my dr.--never thought I'd be able to say something like that about a gynocologist... It is possible to find a fluffy-positive doctor--you just have to be upfront and stand your ground--don't be afraid to dump your gyno if all he/she offers is criticism instead of supports and solutions. You deserve to have a positive pregnancy, just the same as a non-fluffy lady! okay... that's my soap-box rant for today!! :)
We'll be testing exactly one week from today! I CAN'T WAIT!!!

Good luck on the test, sending happy vibes. I think the biggest issue with being overweight is the diabetes thing. It's just something we need to keep our eyes out for...but even non fluffy peeps have that problem. Best of luck

Re: any overweight pregnant moms out there?
Hi!!!! Good luck TTC! The best thing to do about your weight during pregnancy is to eat as healthy as possible (sometimes morning sickness doesn't allow for it!) and avoid sugar/caffeine, as it raises your risk for GD. Don't stress about your weight as stress only makes it harder to conceive and harder to lose weight in the future! I'm overweight and my goal is to not gain more than 25 pounds. BUT if I do, I'm going to get a gym membership after the baby is born...thus forcing me to workout! I don't want to be a GD because I don't want to become insulin dependent...I HATE SHOTS! Frankly, now that I'm pregnant, I'm just trying to keep my baby healthy. I know that I can lose the weight after the baby is born, so I'm not going to stress out over it. ALTHOUGH, I'm only 7 weeks and my tummy has a definite pooch now...I'm trying not to tell my job until my 2nd trimester...hoping my baby won't give me away! Good luck to you! Let us know how you're doing!

Re: any overweight pregnant moms out there?
Good luck mouseteeth! I am glad you found a Dr you like b/c it's really important to have good communication with your OB.
I am proud to say that I went to the Dr on tuesday and at 20 weeks pregnant, I have only gained 2 lbs since my first weight at 9 weeks! The baby is growing just fine, we had an u/s weds and he is actually looking a little big. I also took my one hr glucose test and should have results by next week. Keep you fingers crossed for me, I really want to be diabetes free this time!

Re: any overweight pregnant moms out there?
Hi. I currently am pregnant with my third boy!! I have two that are 7 and 10 now. I had c-sections with the first two because my pelvic spines were too small to allow a vaginal birth, so this time we have a scheduled c-section and I am a bit nervous. With my first preg I started off at 144lbs, I am 5'1" tall. A week after I had him I was back down to 140, but over the next three yrs I gained back up to 155 and at the time I birthed the second I was 178lbs. I remember going in for my 1 week ck up and I was 171lbs. I said 'how is that possible, the baby was almost 8lbs by himself' I asked if they left the placenta or maybe another baby in there!!!! From that point to now I gained up to 196lbs and got preg with our third son. I have only gained 19lbs so far which really makes me feel great. I keep doing the math in my head, lol.... If I gain to 220 and the baby weighs 9lbs - 11lbs and the placenta and the rest has to weigh at least 10lbs or more then maybe I will still be under 200 when I am done... right????
One can wish, lol. I was unable to breast feed with my other two past about 3 months. It was really difficult and this time I am about twice the breast size so I am really worried. (I am a 40 H) For those out there looking for plus size maternity clothes, I went to Motherhood Maternity at our local mall, but I know you can order online with them too. I wear about a XXL in the shirts and XL in pants. I also went to a place called BrasPlus to get my nursing bra as I literally could not find one my size anywhere!!!! That link is http://www.brasplus.com/. It is run by two ladies that are way helpful, I actually felt like a normal person when getting my bras. I didn't get the 'man your huge' or 'oh my, how do you move with those things' comments. I was treated like my size was no big deal and the bras fit great!!!
Anyway, I actually found this site because I was looking for anyone who may have experienced a c-section recovery at an overweight size. I don't know why this time is any different from the others, but I am driving my self insane with worry. My other two boys were born in the winter in Colorado so heat wasn't an issue. We wanted a summer baby this time, but we live in Nevada, lol... didn't think this through very well, lol. So, now I am dying from the heat and even though I have a fan that blows right on me at night I am noticing that my old c-secion scar is damp all the time from being in that fold. I am really nervous about how I am going to recover when I can't keep it dry. I am seriously considering changing my mind and asking for a VBAC, but I know it is futile. I was told years ago that I would have to deliver a baby under 6lbs to have even the chance of vaginal birth and this baby feels even bigger than the other two were!!!
So, lol... I am just looking for any suggestions on recovery - aside from asking for more happy pills as that is a given, lol.... I was so happy to find this whole thread as it was comforting to know that I wasn't the only person to be overweight having a baby. Because it sure feels like it sometimes. I am really going to try this time to loose weight afterwards as even before getting pregnant I was having problems with hip and joint pain, high cholesterol and trouble breathing because of breast weight. Not to mention the typical back pains and motion problems that you have when you are heavier. I will keep my eye on this site for any helpful suggestions!!!
Thanks for letting me vent!!!
