any overweight pregnant moms out there?
Hi. I started my last pregnancyat 197 (I am 5'5"). I gained an embarassing 57 pounds because all I craved was junk food and veggies literarally made me sick for the first 5 months of my pregnancy. I started this new pregnancy at 222. I was (and am) quite concerned about my weight, but my OB/GYN tried to nicely reassure me that many "fluffy" girls do fine through pregnancy. My morning sickness is not bad this time and I actually am craving fruits and vegetables, so I am hoping to keep my weight gain under 15 pounds.
Are there any other overweight moms out there? I would like to hear other people's experiences, in particular about the last few months of pregnancy and delivery. (I had a c-section with the first and would like to do a VBAC with this one.)

Re: any overweight pregnant moms out there?
Well, with my first i weighed 130 nd gained 60 lbs, then when I got pregnant with my second I started at 174 and gained 34 lbs. So this time I am starting at 197 and have told myself that I can only gain max of 20 lbs. I dont know, I hate this uncomfortable feeling of carrying all of this weight around. I am trying to eat good foods only.

Re: any overweight pregnant moms out there?
Yeah, this is my third time at it. The 1st two pregnancys i was 250 starting and i lost about 20 lbs with each one the 1st few months and only gained 15 of it back, so i essentially ended up the same weight after. I had mild gest diabetes with the 1st and with the 2nd i had it pretty bad, unfortunatly it didnt really go away that time. I didnt do anything about it for a long time. I finally got up the nerve to go to the dr and take care of it. (im terrified of needles-dont want to give myself insuling shots) I spent a few months getting my sugars under control and lost 30lbs. So im starting this one at 220lbs. I feel better this time, im contiuing to loose some wieght-probably due to the diabetic diet im on. So over all even though i have the diabetes and all i dont think having a baby while you are overwieght is much different, your doc is right the only things you are at higher risk for is gest diabetes and high blood pressure, which of course can happen to "non-fluffy" women too. The more day to day problems are finding maternity clothes to fit and having to pay more for them, and people you dont see very often thinking oh my god she put on a lot of wieght, cause sometimes it takes awhile for the belly to take on that shape. I find that mine doesent get really round like all the pics i see and other people i know and my belly button dosent pop, so im in favor of the tees that say something to the baby effect.
Good luck and dont worry.

Re: any overweight pregnant moms out there?
I was 220 with my first (i am 5' 7") and developed gestational diabetes. I only gained 17 pounds with him though, so that was good. I started at 230 with my second and had diabetes much earlier in the pregnancy and gave myself 2 insulin shots a day to control my sugars. I only gained 12 pounds with him. Other than the diabetes, both pregnancies were great. I was induced a week early with both, since diabetes can make for a big baby. Both births were great and babies were a healthy 8 lb 8 oz and 8 lb 3 oz, so not too big. I am only 13 weeks with this one and starting at a much heavier weight (darn holidays!). I am hoping things go as well this time, although it has been 7 years since the last. I think it's great that you are going to try a vbac. While I do not know what it is like to have a c-section, I can tell you that my birth experiences were great! I was up and about within 2 hours of each delivery. I wish you the best of luck and hopefully a much easier recovery this time.

Re: any overweight pregnant moms out there?
I started my first preg. at 140 and when I gave birth I was at 222. I ended up having an emergency c-section with him and when I got preg. again I was at 173 I am now 223 and I still have a little over a month to go. I didn't expect to gain so much weight but I can't stay away from the junk food. I did talk to my doctor about a VBAC but she said that I have to have another c-section because she was worried about the scar tissue and this one is a big guy. But I think that some doctors say that you can have a VBAC after a c-section it just depends on your doctor and the babys size.

Re: any overweight pregnant moms out there?
Yeah yeah, I'm a chunky monkey too. My last two full term pg's, I only gained 7-13 pounds, but when I started to nurse my cuties, I couldn't stay away from food. I ate every little oreo cookie that rolled my way. I am now seven weeks pg, and I weigh 215. WIC says not to gain more than 15 pounds, but I have been pretty hungry this time around. So far so good tho, I have actually stayed the same thus far. I think my metabolism wakes up when I am pg. I don't know why when I'm not pg, but must be the hormones. I feel pretty good, but it is harder to find plus size clothes, much less plus size maternity clothes. Everything has either bows, huge flowers, or ruffles on them, yeah right! I am glad I am due in October, gives me the summer to spend walking outdoors, in the garden, or whatever, just more to do in general. Anyway, my hubby loves me the way I am, so I try to quit dieting all the time, and just accept the way I am. Good luck to all the chunky monkeys out there:)

Re: any overweight pregnant moms out there?
I was overweight the first time I was pregnant with my son and gained alot of weight due to Gestational Diabetes and after he was born I dropped most of the weight, well now I just found out I am pregnant for a second time and I am still overweight. As long as you keep your gaining weight under control you should be fine, my doctor tells me if I gain no weight it wouldnt hurt at all.

To the fluffy moms--were your ultrasounds uncomfortable? They say they are painless, but they had to put so much pressure on my stomach (I am guessing because of the extra insulation I have--ha ha), that it was pretty uncomfortable. Since I am starting this pregnancy 25 pounds heavier, I keep thinking about the discomfort.

Re: any overweight pregnant moms out there?
What a great dialogue!
I have been and still am a plus size mommy. With my first I started out @ 240, but post-Katrina I gained a lot of weight, so with this pregnancy I was about 260 and had lost some weight prior to getting pregnant. I did find a great website with lots of information on all kinds of things. I initially was looking for information on Gestational Diabetes, but found a helpful site....www.plus-sized-pregnancy.org. Hope this proves to be helpful. I am hoping with this GD diet, I will not gain much and will stay healthy for me and my baby.
I am definitely hoping for a VBAC with #2, because that C-section recovery is nothing nice. Good luck to you and thanks for starting this topic off.

Thanks for the website! I will check it out. I can completely agree that C-section recovery is no fun. It is just my bias, but I think it is harder when you are overweight because the scar can't "breathe".

Re: any overweight pregnant moms out there?
My Last 2 pregnancies I started off at 197 - 200 lbs. with my last pregnancy I only gained 25 lbs. This pregnancy I have already gained 26 lbs, that was 2 weeks ago. I am not too worried, because that is eating all just. Healthy food (except salad) makes me ill. I am breastfeeding and along w/changing my diet while b/f it helps me loose the weight fast. With last baby I lost all the baby weight within a couple of weeks. Then i lost 30 more pounds. I plan on trying the same thing this time and once I have healed enough from my c-section I plan on walking, until I can do more at the gym or maybe something else, not sure yet. But I have already forewarned Hubby that I will be loosing all of this extra weight. He can either join me or not, its up to him, however he is not going to sabotage me this time.
Good Luck Ladies.

Re: any overweight pregnant moms out there?
Hi My name is Melissa. I am pregnant with my first and started out at 5' 7" 300lbs. I'm very nervous about developing PIH or pre-eclampsia related to all the extra weight. I'm constantly nauseous and the only thing that seems to make it go away immediately... pickles.. I'm not sure how that works but it has for me.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to limit the amount of weight you've gained? I wake up in the middle of the night starving. I don't want to pack on more weight because I eat and go back to sleep.

Re: any overweight pregnant moms out there?
It's hard b/c during the nausea you just want to eat whatever won't make you sicker or not at all. I suggest you look into a diebetic diet, which is just healthy and low carb. I gained 17 with the 1st and 12 with the 2nd and I followed this diet, not out of desire but compliance with my GD. I still allowed myself a treat once in a while, moderation is the key. I have unfortunately already gained 5 lbs with this one and that was my weight increase for last month. I go on St. Patty's Day for next visit, cross your fingers that I have maintained my weight.
