u/s shows cyst in my baby's brain

SO I JUST WENT ON FEB 14TH FOR MY REGULAR CECKUP AND THE DOCTOR INFORMED ME THAT THE ULTRASOUND FROM TWO WEEKS AGO SHOWED THERE WAS A 2MM CYST IN THE MIDDLE OF MY BABY'S BRAIN.  I KEPT TELLING EVERYONE THAT THE U/S TECH SEEN SOMETHING DUE TO THE FACT SHE TOOK LIKE 6 DIFFERENT ANGLED PICTURES OF HIS BRAIN AND STAYED THERE FOR QUITE SOME TIME, I OF COURSE DID NOT SEE WHAT SHE SEEN BUT I JUST KNEW BASED ON THE CHANGE IN HER BODY LANGUAGE AND THE FACT THAT I KNOW WHAT THEY LOOK FOR AND ABOUT HOW LONG IT TAKES TO MEASURE EVERYTHING AND GET A GOOD LOOK.  HE SAYS IT IS COMMONLY ASSOCIATED WITH TRISOMY 21 AND TRISOMY 18, BUT THAT MY BABY HAD NO OTHER SOFT MARKERS INDICATING THESE TWO AND MY QUAD SCREEN WAS AS NEGATIVE AS IS GETS.  HE SAYS NOT TO WORRY, THE CYST WILL "DISAPPEAR."  OF COURSE I AM FREAKING OUT, WE'RE TALKING ABOUT MY UNBORN CHILD.  I CAN HANDLE A BABY WITH TRISOMY 21, BUT A CLOSE FRIEND OF MINE HAD A BABY WITH TRISOMY 18 AND THESE CHILDREN RARELY LIVE TO BE BORN. IF THEY DO LIVE TO BE BORN, THEY DO NOT USUALLY LIVE PAST SIX MONTHS AND IF THEY DO LIVE PAST SIX MONTHS THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A REPORT OF A TRISOMY 18 BABY LIVING PAST ONE YEAR.  DUE TO THE EXTENSIVE BIRTH DEFECTS.  THAT I COULD NOT HANDLE.  I KNOW HE SAYS NOT TO WORRY AND THAT HE ISN'T WORRIED.  HE SAYS THE ONLY REASON HE EVEN TOLD ME WAS BECAUSE HE WOULD'NT WANT ME TO SEE IT IN MY CHART AND WONDER WHY HE DID NOT TELL ME.  HAS ANYONE HAD THIS HAPPEN?  IF SO, WHAT WAS THE OUTCOME?  DID THEY DO A REPEAT U/S TO MONITOR THE PROGRESSION? I REALLY NEED SOME ADVICE OR I AM GOING TO STRESS MYSELF AND MY  BABY OUT! Crying

I'm not sure what tests they had done on her, but a lady that I go to church with said that she was told that her unborn daughter HAD Trisomy 18.  She still planned on having her baby and guess what...she is perfect, no trisomy 18 and she is around 12 years old.  These tests aren't always fool-proof.

I had a positive AFP test (showing increased risk for spina-bifida).  Needless to say, I was a nervous wreck over that possibility.  My doctor sent me to a specialist and I had a repeat Level 2 u/s.  Then they had me repeat it 2 weeks later to be sure.  Everything checked out fine and my son was born with NO problems.

Hang in there (I know easier said than done) and if it will help you feel better about it, have them send you for a repeat u/s. I'll keep you and the baby in my prayers.

Actually, now that I'm thinking about it, my sister-in-law was told that my nephew had a cyst in his brain too.  When they went back for the level 2 u/s, it wasn't there anymore.  I think that it's probably much more common than we know. He is a healthy 5 1/2 year old.

I know what it's like to have anxiety and stress over the unknown.  I am suffering the same thing myself, not the cyst in the brain, but other complications that really have no explanation.  I'm praying for you and hope that the next u/s will show no abnormalities.

    HEY EVERYBODY,

THANKS FOR THE SUPPORT AND INPUT.  I CALLED THE DOCTOR TO FIND OUT THE NAME OF THE CYST. IT IS A CHOROID PLEXUS CYST.  I BEEN LOOKING ONLINE AND BEST I CAN TELL, THIS IS PRETTY COMMON.  THE NURSE TOLD ME THAT THE DR. WILL MOST LIKELY DO A SECOND U/S TO SEE IF IT HAS DISAPPEARED, HOWEVER HE DID NOT SAY ANYTHING ABOUT IT AT THE APPT.  ANYWAY, I'M STARTING TO FEEL A LITTLE BETTER ABOUT THE SITUATION FOR NOW, JUST SCARED THEY MIGHT FIND SOMETHING ELSE WHEN THEY DO THE NEXT U/S.  HOPEFULLY MY BABY BOY WITH THE PERFECT PROFILE (THE U/S PIC WE HAVE IS A GREAT PROFILE PIC, YOU CAN MAKE OUT HIS NOSE, LIPS, AND OTHER FEATURES, LOOKS LIKE DADDY!)  WILL BE JUST FINE.

    TO KRAE,

WHAT KIND OF ISSUES ARE YOU HAVING IF YOU DON'T MIND ME ASKING AND IF YOU DO I HOPE THAT EVERYTHING GETS BETTER FOR YOU.  MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS ARE WITH YOU ALL AND I HOPE THAT EVERYONE HAS A HAPPY AND HEALTH NINE MONTHS!! Big Smile

THANKS FOR ALL OF YOUR SUPPORT.  I AM DEALING WITH THIS BETTER NOW.  I WENT IN FOR MY CHECK UP YESTERDAY AND ASKED THE DR. IF HE PLANNED ON DOING A REPEAT U/S.  HE SAID YES AT 35 WEEKS BUT THAT HE WOULDN'T BE LOOKING AT THE CYST.  HE WOULD RATHER PASS IT ON TO THE PEDIATRICIANS ON THE DAY THE BABY IS BORN AND THEY WILL SCAN HIS BRAIN THEN.  SO I GUESS WE WILL JUST HAVE TO PRAY AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS.

Re: u/s shows cyst in my baby's brain

There is a reason that your doctor is not worried a bout this cyst.   Choroid Plexus cysts are nothing serious.  My baby has one and my doctor said it is supposed to go away by 28 weeks or something like that.   My doctor also told me that at one point it was thought that it was linked to chromosome disorders but they have found that it is not.  A lot of the stuff that you look at online is seriously outdated and not true anymore.  No wonder you are getting scared.   Calm down because most of the stuff online is no longer true.  It is one of those things that just happens and then goes away.  Quit panicking.  Trust me there is no reason to.   It is less serious than the cysts that we get on our bodies.      My doctor said that they might look at it again but they are not worried about it and he said the only reason that he said anything to me is because I am the parent and I have a right to know but it really is something so minor that in actuality it is not even worth mentioning.   So, calm down.
