Breastfeeding a newborn with a 24 month old

I am due at the end of April and plan to breastfeed.  However, my hesitation about that is how my 24 month old is going to react.  I'm worried that while I'm busy breastfeeding, he will be standing on top of the furniture or getting into something he's not supposed to!  Breastfeeding my older child was not a complete success and I only breastfed for 3 months.  I'd really like this to work this time around.  Anyone out there breastfeeding when they have an additional older child?  How do you do it???

Breastfeeding with an older child will be difficult. My son is 6 so it won't be as hard on me except I'd have to keep an eye on him. I have a couple sisters that breastfed with their children close in age. What they did with the older one was get something to occupy them for a little while. The baby usually nurses for about 30 minutes anyway. Figure out what your child's favorite thing to do and see if he'll do it for a little while.

You could try using that time to read to your older child or color with them. There have been a few times where an older sibling wanted to sit on my lap while I nursed the baby, so I used a pillow and nursed the baby off to the side.

I bf my newborn with my son...I just would occupy him in his room with the gate up and then go to my room and feed her. Amanda

Alex was 25 months when Evan was born and it was never really an issue.  Granted, Evan and I didn't have those quiet, gaze into each other's eyes moments like I did with Alex when I fed him, but it was still a positive experience.  I would often lay on the floor in the room Alex was playing in and feed Evan.

Reading is an excellent suggestion. My oldest was 2 when I had #2 and he loved to sing. I would just keep him occupied singing songs with him. One of his favorites was itsy bitsy spider. Now granted you are not going to have to occupy him for every single feeding so you'll still have those quite moments occasionally with the baby, but I just found it a great time to dedicate some time to my oldest while the baby was content as well.
